Xiegu X6200 Accessories — What's Worth Buying and What You Actually Need

The Xiegu X6200 is one of the best portable HF radios available right now for POTA operations. It comes reasonably well equipped out of the box but there are a few accessories worth picking up right away and a few others worth knowing about. Here's my honest take as someone who runs one in the field for Parks on the Air activations.

What Comes in the Box

The X6200 ships with everything you need to get on the air immediately:

  • Hand microphone for SSB operation
  • Wall charger
  • Battery cable
  • USB data cable
  • Battery pack — attaches externally to the radio

The battery system is designed for quick swapping in the field — detach the depleted pack, attach a charged one, keep operating. No tools, no downtime.

Spare Battery — Worth Having Eventually

The X6200 runs on a swappable battery pack that attaches to the back of the radio — no tools, no disassembly. One pack is included in the box and honestly it lasts longer than a typical park activation so don't feel pressured to buy a second one right away. Where a spare becomes useful is if you're doing back to back activations in the same day or a long operating session where you don't want to think about power at all. It's a nice thing to have in the bag eventually but it's not a day one purchase.

External Speaker — Makes a Bigger Difference Than You'd Expect

The built-in speaker on the X6200 is adequate but the Xiegu external speaker is a noticeable upgrade — clearer audio, better volume, and easier to monitor signal reports in a noisy park environment. For FT8 digital operation you're not listening to audio anyway, but when you do need to hear SSB or CW signals clearly the external speaker earns its place in the bag.

Bluetooth / WiFi Dongle — Wireless Freedom

The Xiegu Bluetooth and WiFi dongle unlocks wireless connectivity for the X6200 — useful for connecting to logging apps and controlling the radio remotely from a tablet without running cables. In a field setup where you're trying to minimize cable clutter this is a worthwhile addition. I run my DigiPi and Android tablet alongside the X6200 and reducing physical connections keeps the setup cleaner and faster to deploy.

WR-12 Wideband Receiver — On the Radar

Xiegu makes a WR-12 wideband receiver attachment that expands the X6200's receive capabilities significantly. I picked one up and haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet — but it's on the list for an upcoming activation. I'll update this post with a full report once I've used it in the field.

What You Don't Need to Buy

The hand mic that comes in the box is perfectly functional for SSB — no need to upgrade it unless you have a specific reason. The wall charger and USB data cable are solid. Don't let anyone talk you into a bunch of aftermarket accessories before you've actually used the radio and identified what you personally need. The X6200 is capable right out of the box.

The Short List

If you just picked up an X6200 here's what I'd prioritize:

  • Spare battery — buy it the same day as the radio
  • External speaker — buy it soon after
  • Bluetooth/WiFi dongle — when you're ready to go wireless
  • WR-12 receiver — when you want to expand receive capabilities

Everything else can wait until you know what you actually need from your own operating style.

One More Thing — My 3D Printed Tripod Mount

If you run your X6200 for extended periods you've probably noticed it gets warm sitting flat on a surface. I designed and 3D printed a bottom mount that lets you put the radio on any standard mini tripod — lifting it off the surface for better airflow and angling the face toward you for a much better view of the waterfall display. Two problems solved with one simple part.

Installation takes minutes — it bolts directly to the existing covered plate on the bottom of the radio using the included hardware. No modifications, no permanent changes.

I have these in stock and ship them from Tampa Bay, Florida. Printed in black PLA and field tested through real POTA activations in Florida heat.
