Hey, I'm Joe — W4GGJ, aka GrumpaGrinch. Welcome to Tava One, my corner of the amateur radio world based out of Tampa Bay, Florida.
I got my Technician license in December 2024 and upgraded to General Class in February 2026 — and I haven't put the radio down since. These days you'll find me out at Florida parks activating for POTA (Parks on the Air), running FT8 and digital modes from my DigiPi station at home, and chasing DX whenever the bands cooperate.
This site is where I share my activation logs, gear reviews, and the occasional deep dive into the tech side of the hobby — portable antennas, field power, digital modes, and everything in between. I also stock a small shop with accessories and gear useful for portable and home station operation.

FT8 for the First Time — A Simple Guide to Digital Modes and POTA for Licensed Hams
📘 My book is live on Amazon! FT8 for the First Time — A Simple Guide to Digital Modes and POTA for Licensed Hams
Your license is in your hand. Now what?
FT8 is the most popular digital mode in amateur radio today — and for good reason. Five watts into a simple antenna can work the world. A quiet computer and a modest radio is all you need to start making contacts across continents. But getting from "I just got my license" to "I just worked Germany on 5 watts" takes more than most guides tell you.
This book fills that gap.
Written by an active ham radio operator and POTA activator, FT8 for the First Time walks you through every step of getting on the air with digital modes and taking your station into the field for Parks on the Air. No assumptions. No skipped steps. No wading through manuals written for engineers.
In the Field
This is what it looks like in the field. No fancy setup, no perfect conditions — just a radio, a battery box, and a park sign to lean on. That's Parks on the Air and I wouldn't have it any other way.

More About My Callsign (W4GGJ)
My callsign is a vanity callsign. I really didn't care much for the callsign assigned to me by the FCC (KR4ABQ), plus I had more of a personal idea in mind.
I am known as Grumpa Grinch. For Christmas every year, my entire house is decorated in a Grinch theme, and I dress up as the Grinch at various times. I also love the movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. For the Grumpa part, my granddaughter calls me Grumpa. It's like Grampa, but only Grumpier. I am also a Disney fan and my favorite character is Grumpy from Snow White.
So with the combination of the 2, I came up with GrumpaGrinch which is now my gaming, streaming and every other name I use online.
