Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park

A coastal state park with deep history — the Tocobaga quarried stone tools here, and by the 1800s the area supported salt production critical to the Civil War, cattle ranching, turpentine, and one of the largest mullet fishing operations on the Gulf Coast. The state acquired it for preservation in 1992. Good views, a welcome breeze off the water, and serious biting insects.

Getting in

Hours

Open 8:00 a.m. until sunset, year round.

Access

Three separate entrances — check which one your GPS is aiming at. The main entrance at 8737 U.S. 19, Port Richey is the developed one, with restrooms, a picnic area, boardwalks, hiking trails, a kayak and canoe launch and concessions. The Black Rail trailhead at 6641 State Road 52 has none of that.

Setting up

Where to operate

Operating from the back of a vehicle works at the main entrance, which has a picnic area alongside the parking. The two outlying trailheads have no facilities and no developed parking.

Antennas

An 18.3 ft vertical with eight radials, with a laptop and DigiPi. No SWR figure recorded.

Conditions to plan for

Biting insects are severe enough to make the park unusable without repellent. There is no shop on site, so bring it with you.
