There is a limited supply of the refurbished DMX-40's available, and more become available from time to time. If you see "SOLD OUT" when you visit our Refurbished product page then check back another time.
DMX-40 Overview
The DMX-40 comes with its own keyboard, protective lid, touch-screen cleaning cloth, and a screw-adaptor plug for connection to a 12 volt battery. It is a mere 11 oz of integrated electronics, including three powerful microprocessors, plus a 3-watt QRP transceiver. One microprocessor is responsible for the graphical user interface (GUI), while the other handle the many tasks required to produce an amazing experience for the user. No computer required - built in! All you need is a 12V power source, an antenna, a powered speaker or headphone, and the included keyboard and you are ready to join the CW revolution!
World’s Best CW Decoder! Decodes in Noise!
We are not just blowing our own horn here: it is our customers who tell us this, based on thousands of hours with hundreds of locations and users all over the globe, who have compared the DMX-40 decoder with everything else out there! The tell us nothing beats it! The decoder is based on a combination of analog and digital signal processing to separate the signal from the noise, and can on occasion decode a signal you can’t even hear under the noise!
2 in 1: Base Station Companion & QRP Transceiver
The DMX-40 is a unique 2-in-1 product: an intelligent decoder and encoder for your base station - we call it External Mode - and a built-in QRP transceiver for 40 meters. In External Mode, augmenting your main transceiver, it can operate on any band your transceiver operates on. In QRP stand-alone transceiver mode, it works only 40 meters. The accessory External Transceiver Cable Assembly is available to simplify the connection to an external transceiver.
Powerful yet Easy to Use GUI
Equipped with over 10 unique features found on no other transceiver on the market, at any price, along with its color touchscreen GUI, extensive help menus, powerful computer automation - essentially a PC and a transceiver in a single box - and 28 different graphic screens, the DMX-40 offers you more than anything else on the market, and is still small and lightweight. It comes with a protective lid, and many accessories are available.
Learning Code? Or just Texting?
The DMX-40 is the absolute best training tool for learning Morse code. Utilizing "Cognitive Association" for learning to hear incoming code and translating each character and word automatically in your head happens after only a few months by listening and watching the code appear translated into text on the LCD. Of course you are already doing this - so there is zero work involved - just happens: your brain learns. Our customers tell us after a few months, they start thinking the character in their mind before it shows up on the screen. Effortless learning!
For sending, use the key to send to the decoder, in Receive Mode. The decoder processes this as if it is another station, and tells you what it thinks you are sending, and the speed you are sending at. Much better than just listening to your code. And of course you can hear the code as well on the DMX-40 headphone out.
Great Technicians: Get on HF!
The DMX-40 is the perfect solution for technician class licensees for getting on the HF bands, without having to learn CW first! Start out by merely texting, and using the built-in QSO automation, and grow from there, using our powerful RPL (Rig Programming Language) to customize the rig to your specifications!
Give Your Teen Something Fun!
The DMX-40 is great for teenagers! Get them off their social media, and onto World Media, via ham radio! It will train their brain from the crazy thinking today into a strong, logical thinking process, and it will be tremendous fun, looking for that contact in a distant country, or finding a friend in Europe, South America, or the tropical islands!
How About Advanced Hams?
You might think that a product like the DMX-40, which was designed for emergency situations (hams use CW to get out in emergencies because it gets through when other modes don’t) would not provide anything useful for an advanced ham operator. WRONG! Many operators can copy 15 to 20 WPM but can’t copy 30, for example. Some have tried to learn CW but have failed, for many reasons. Others have physical limitations that make it difficult to use a key. The DMX-40 provides a solution for all of these cause and more. The powerful RPL microprogramming language enables an advanced ham operator to extensively customize the automation of the DMX-40 for contests, net control, and general operation according to their particular operating style.
DMX-40 Summary
The DMX-40 has something for everyone! At a very affordable price, and an even more affordable price for an almost new Refurbished unit! You can’t get features like this anywhere else, and the price is a great inflation fighter! The DMX-40 price has survived the Biden Inflation and remains at the same price it was at in 2019!
KEYBOARD IS INCLUDED, as well as a small set of wired earbuds! Also check out our DMX-40 accessories!

DMX/MMX High Power Solar Battery System
USA SHIPPING ONLY!*
The High Power Solar Battery System
The High Power Solar Battery System includes the following items:
1. A compact, 4 panel 11 watt solar panel with >22% efficiency for full 5V 2A USB 2.0 charging power. This is a very nice, compact unit that feels like a small book when folded up. This is the most compact design for charging just one device at a time, or two devices at a slower rate.
2. Our Solar Battery, a 20 Amp-Hour battery with a great flashlight and a compass built in. This is a very powerful battery, only 29% less power than our Super Power Solar Battery System.
3. A 5V to 12V cable to power your MMX or DMX from the battery bank
4. A USB A female to C cable to connect the solar panel to the battery for charging at the maximum rate.
Our Super Power Solar Battery System provides additional features and more power.
About Amp-Hours
Batteries based on multi-cell Li-Ion batteries are normally rated at the voltage of a single cell, typically 3.6 volts. This is true of this battery, as well. However, there is a power conversion circuit to up the voltage to 5V for the USB outputs. Because of the higher voltage and the loss of energy in the conversion process, typical output at 5 volts is around 12 - 13 Amp-Hours, and at 12V, after being converted a second time, is about 4.8 - 5,0 Anp-Hours. Compare this to. typical Gel Cell 12V battery, rated at 7 Amp-Hours. Sounds like the Gel Cell - at 3x the weight - wins, right? WRONG, because you are not supposed to discharge the Gel Cell more than 50% of charge - that is, only 3.5 Amp-Hours! So this High Power battery, which has over 4.8 Amp-Hours of actual usable power, is significantly better, and ⅓ the weight and size.
In addition, all of the components can be packed into the included zipper canvas bag, shown in the image. Weight is less than 2 lbs!
Performance
The total package provides all you need to power your MMX or DMX off grid, either for a short period, or for an extended period. Your MMX or DMX will operate in receive mode for over 30 hours from a fully charged battery without recharging. A typical usage pattern allows you to operate continuously for 8 hours a day both transmit and receive on only 2 hours of sun per day. A complete battery recharge takes about 6-7 hours of sun.
IMPORTANT: The 5V to 12V cable that connects your MMX or DMX to the battery provides 12V with current limited. This prevents damage to your PA (power amplifier) when under stress from high SWR. This is a very valuable safety feature.
*Batteries cannot be shipped internationally. You can request a refund via PayPal after you receive your product for the cost of the batteries in that case.

MMX Morse Transceiver Reference Manual
PDF files for the MMX Reference Manual and the MMX/ZERO Quick Start Guide are of course made available in the Document Library under the website Resources menu item. However, some people prefer paper! Note that ePub versions also are available, which can be used in a Kindle or other document readers.
Version 1.2
This is version 1.2 of the Reference Manual, and has many improvements. Besides being in full color, it is also printed in a beautiful bound version on glossy paper like a magazine, only with heavier paper. And, it's 30% lighter than the original edition!
Many errors were corrected from the original edition, and more information was added. However, please note the following:
START WITH THE MMX/ZERO QUICK START GUIDE
The Quick Start Guide, version 1.2, has also gone through even more major revisions, so it is now set up for both the MMX Morse Transceiver and ZERO. Use the Reference Manual for .... reference. When you need more info. Use the Quick Start Guide to get everything set up and running, and to learn basics.
Multi-Band QRP Portable Computer Plus Transceiver!
Check out the MMX Bundles below!
NOTE: while the receiver in the MMX can tune outside of the amateur radio bands, the transmitter is restricted to the frequencies allocated by the FCC for amateur radio operation. In addition, by entering your license, the frequencies may be additionally limited based on the available frequencies allocated for your license level.
The MMX Multi-band Morse Code Transceiver is the evolution of the DMX-40 Morse Code Transceiver, and includes the keyboard and a small pair of wired earbuds! It has the same industry-leading decoder, the same high sensitive SDR receiver, 10 frequency memories per band, RPL microprogramming for custom automation, and more. However, what is added is a band board plug-in system that supports up to 3 bands. Currently, the supported bands include 80, 40, and 20 meters. You can purchase a single band MMX, and add other bands later, purchase a dual band MMX, and add the third band later, or even get all three bands on your initial order!
Specifications are similar to the DMX-40+, such as receiver sensitivity of -119 dBm. Power output is highest on 40 meter, and slightly lower on 80 and 20 meter bands, as listed in the Specifications tab in the right column.
Better, Easier, Relaxing QSO's at Higher Speeds!
Do you need help decoding those fast senders? Do you want a less stressful QSO? Not only do we help you decode with the best decoder in the industry, but you will gradually learn to do so as well by way of cognitive association! For sending, you can use a straight key, the built-in keyboard to Morse system with automatic station ID's and hand-offs, auto-CQ and station calls, automatic capture of the other station's call sign, plus the powerful RPL language for microprogramming to customize of the automation or create your own automations. And, you can get help and practice sending using the build-in decoder to listen to your keying in receive mode. It will treat you as "just another station" and decode your signal, give you your speed, and tell you what other stations would think you had sent. Great key training! And don't forget to start by pressing the Space Bar to restart the decoder before you begin keying!.
Another stress reducer! The built-in typing speed test function sets your maximum transmit speed to match your typing speed! This means that - even if the other guy can type or send at 35 WPM, but you can only type at 22 WPM, that is how fast you will go, enabling you to have time to partially fill the type-ahead buffer so you can relax and edit your keyboard mistakes, and have a little time to think about what you want to say next. A great stress reducer. Of course if the other station is sending at a lower speed, your MMX will match them so they can decode you!
Talk about stress reducing, the automatic capture of the other station's call sign is a great one! It automatically appears in the CCS button (CCS is Captured Call Sign), and is used for the automatic station ID's and hand-offs. No more quick scribbling to write down their call sign! Or typing station ID's over and over. Even a Handle, QTH, Rig, Antenna macro built-in so you can send that info with a single keystroke!
If you want to use a paddle or iambic key, an external keyer is required to convert your key to straight key or "pure Morse" output to feed into the MMX.
So, up your game! Get an MMX to go with you for a great experience in QRP with a lightweight powerful computer plus QRP transceiver! Great for POTA, SOTA, etc. Or, get an MMX attached to your station using our External Transceiver Cable Assembly to make it easy and neat to connect and integrate your station and the MMX as your decoder and encoder. You can also just use the MMX as a decoder, with no keyboard by pressing the status line to restart the decoder
More Info!
There is lots more features: check out our main features on the Features tab in the right panel, and our More Features list!
You can Download Data Sheet here.
Below are two video links. The first is a long open box to QSO live demo via Coffee and Ham Radio on YouTube. Note that the MMX is accidentally placed into CTX mode during much of the session (and thus can't decode human code, or HCW). I finally noticed that, and after that, things went a lot better!
And here is a look inside the MMX. Note: What comes with the MMX is misrepresented in this video. Only the keyboard, cleaning cloth, and power adaptor come with the MMX, but otherwise, pretty accurate:
Also, for more information, read the DMX-40 description. The MMX has all the same functions and features, but 3 band capability!
What's Inside the MMX
Add Bands to your MMX!
If you purchased an MMX Morse Code Transceiver with less then its full complement of bands, you can always add a band board at a later time.
Each band board contains the specialized frequency-sensitive components and control circuitry for the band it was designed to operate on. The band board is automatically sensed and the band is automatically added to the available bands via the Frequency Button on the Main Screen. When you select the band for the card, it is automatically connected into the circuitry of the SDR receiver and the transmitter, and ready to use instantly.
Each band board also contains protection components to prevent overload of the final power amplifier (PA) of the transmitter in adverse circumstances. The protection circuit is automatically resettable in most circumstances. While it is very unlikely to cause interruption of the ability to transmit on its band due to a failure of the protection components, a backup band card is not a bad idea in cases where getting one repaired is difficult.
Currently available are 80 meter, 40 meter, and 20 meter band cards.
This is the reference manual for the MMX ZERO. It focuses only on the ZERO capabilities, with no reference to the MMX transceiver, which is not built in. ZERO means no bands built-in. The manual is printed in full color in magazine format on glossy paper.
Included in the manual are instructions for setting up a transceiver, using the Icom 7300 as an example. The user will have to translate that to their own transceiver, as different companies use different terms for the same thing, and different methods or controls for settings.
It is strongly recommended to use the MMX & ZERO Quick Start Guide to begin using your MMX ZERO, and then use this manual the way it was intended, as a reference for information. The manual has a rich set of appendices that have a lot of useful information, for example.
Of course this manual is available as a free PDF download in our Document Library.
MMX ZERO...
The MMX ZERO is loved by many current users. However, time moves on. The ZERO was specifically "just" a Morse code encoder/decoder, with no transceiver inside. Thus, no bands, and the name ZERO.
MMX ZERO was one of our best sellers for quite some time. But again, times change.
We introduced the DitStomr Cypher™ at HamCation in February, 2026. It was our most exciting new product introduction, and we ended up selling out our first production run in 2 days. We more than doubled the production run, and followed it by another of the same size. We started shipping in early April, with Release 1 of software. This was replaced with Release 2 in early May, and will again be replaced with Release 3 in late June. Each release increased the power of the decoder and added planned features as well as customer requested features.
The Cypher is the best alternative to the MMX ZERO, and is less expensive, and much smaller.
However, there are still some situations where you might want to consider a different alternative, the DMX-40. Yes, it does have a 40M QRM transceiver inside, along with the same guts as the MMX ZERO. Turned on, it operates like an MMX ZERO, until you turn on the internal transceiver. So if you want that package, with a built-in LCD rather than using an external divice to host the Cypher GUI (a PC, a tablet, a phone), then the DMX-40 is for you. Only slightly more expensive than the MMX ZERO.
Summary: ZERO discontinued, replaced by:
DitStomr Cypher™, with full color graphical user interface (GUI) hosted on a browser on your device, with extraordinary decoding, audio scope, powerful band pass filter (BPF), and much more.
DMX-40, with built-in LCD, good decoding/encoding, self-contained.

International Orders
Be aware that by purchasing a product from the USA will require going through customs in your country, and typically you may be required to pay duty on your order. Check with your local authorities for details. Also note that if your country uses the VAT tax system, VAT taxes will also apply. Finally, UPS also typically charges a fee for handling the collection of duties and taxes. USPS does not, but their shipments take longer.
The Right Speaker
for your MMX or DMX-40!
There are a lot of variables in the modern self-powered speaker products. Finding the right one that works for the application in mind - allowing you to hear the audio from the DMX-40 or MMX without using headphone.
It turns out that most of the critical functions are not published, so you find out the hard way that the speaker does not work for you. For example, I have a speaker that "forgets" it is plugged into the MMX after having been turned off and back on. So, I have to unplug the audio cable, and plug it back in every time. Nuts. Who would have thought even to ask?
And then there are the speakers that claim to have AUX capability, but when you get them in your hot little hands, hey, where is the AUX input jack? Oh, it's an auxiliary input from a USB source...??
So we took the time to find a suitable speaker to go with your MMX or DMX-40. It is not as small as I would have liked, but it works correctly. And, it has a lot of ofher features you may like:
1. Ability to be charged from our solar battery system
2. FM radio built-in
3. Bluetooth 5.3 connection to your phone
4. Built in microphone for clear phone calling
5. Play MP3 from a USB plug-in
6 Play MP3 from micro SD card plug-in (TF format)
7. Two 5W speakers with stereo sound, 45mm drivers
It also supports TWS, has auto shut-off, It talks to you. It makes coffee! No, forget that. So don't let your teenager get ahold of this! Keep it with your gear and it will remain in excellent condition, no sand in the works. Well, OK, it is also splash proof, whatever that means, so maybe no sand in the works.
The important thing is, plug it in and turn it on, and adjust the volume on the MMX or DMX-40. With typical radio signals and tone signals when transmitting, the speaker should last a day of operation. Charges in 4 hours via an included USB cable into a standard USB power source. Additional cables and USB power bricks available in our Accessories section.
It comes with a manual, but you will need your reading glasses.
This is a complete new massive revision of the original MMX Guide in full color, printed in magazine format! This is the place to start for either a MMX ZERO or a MMX Multi-Band Transceiver.
The Quick Start Guide begins with basic familiarity with the MMX operation, menus, local station setup, and the operation of the CALL, ANS, and CCS buttons, plus volume and decoder gain. Once the basics are covered, which are common to all PreppComm units - including the DMX-40 and the ZERO - the manual branches into two different sections - one for the ZERO and another for the MMX.
Each of the sections starts with electrical setup, and with the ZERO, adds in the external transceiver setup. The sections continue with a quick start on the operation of the unit being covered.
The ZERO guide can be used for the MMX when setting up with an external transceiver, so it becomes useful to the MMX user, as the MMX can operate like a ZERO simply by connecting to an external transceiver.
Not all the information you will need is included in the Quick Start Guide. Use the updated MMX Reference Manual V1.2 or the brand new MMX ZERO Reference Manual V1.0 for more detailed information. All manuals are available in the Document Library for download as PDF or ePub files.
