They Said the FT-450 Couldn't Do It. So I Built Live Shack View.

The FT-450 doesn't ship with a live telemetry dashboard. So I built one. Live Shack View streams the rig and logbook in real time to any browser — running now at w4ggj.tavaone.com.

If you've spent any time in Yaesu FT-450 groups, you've heard it: "It's a great radio, but it doesn't do live telemetry. There's no dashboard, no screen you can throw up in the shack, no real-time view of what the rig is doing."

They're right about the radio. They're wrong about the ceiling.

The FT-450 has been my permanent shack anchor for a long time. It's an honest HF/50 MHz workhorse — not the newest thing on the bench, no fancy network stack, no manufacturer app waiting to feed a screen. But "the radio doesn't ship with it" and "you can't have it" are two very different statements. When you've got an IT and networking background and you know how to build apps, the second one stops being true.

So I built my own. It's called Live Shack View, and it's running right now at w4ggj.tavaone.com.

What it actually shows

Live Shack View is a self-hosted web dashboard. A single Python engine reads the live rig and logbook in real time — every frequency change, every decode, every logged QSO — and streams it to any browser: desktop, tablet, or the monitor mounted above the bench. No screenshots, no manual refreshing. Point a screen at it and walk away.

Right now it's tracking:

  • Live frequency and mode — read directly off the FT-450 (20m FT8 on 14.074 as I write this)
  • Real-time S-meter and last-decode SNR — the needle actually moves
  • Live FT8 decodes streaming out of WSJT-X as they land
  • Propagation at a glance — solar flux, K-index, solar wind, and band conditions
  • Logbook stats — total QSOs, DXCC worked, bands, modes, best DX
  • Live POTA spots so I can see who's activating without alt-tabbing
  • Recent contacts rolling in as they're logged
  • Live ISS tracking — position, range from my grid, altitude, and velocity

It's the entire station distilled into one glanceable screen. The kind of thing a modern SDR gives you out of the box — bolted onto a radio that predates the idea.

How it comes together

The magic isn't in the radio; it's in the plumbing behind it. The FT-450 anchors the setup and feeds CAT data. WSJT-X handles the FT8 decoding, and a UDP cloner script fans that data out to everything that needs it — GridTracker, SpotCollector, DX Lab Suite, and the dashboard feed. The ATU-100 EXT (the excellent N7DDC design) keeps the G5RV happy across the bands. From there it's a web layer I wrote that stitches the live feeds together and serves them up as a clean, always-on view.

The result: an old radio doing something people swear it can't.

The point

This is the whole ethos behind the way I run things. A radio not shipping with a feature is an invitation, not a wall. If you can read the data coming out of the rig — and almost every modern-enough station is spilling data you're not using — you can put it wherever you want it. On a screen in the shack. On a webpage. On your phone in the other room.
