How I Got Started with FT8 Digital — And Why I'll Never Look Back

In my first year of ham radio I made around 300 SSB contacts. Not bad, but it took a full year to get there. Then on December 6th, 2025 — one day after a fellow member of SPARC (St. Petersburg Amateur Radio Club) told me about digital modes at a club meeting — I fired up FT8 for the first time. I now have over 6,400 additional contacts in the log and I haven't stopped since.
That's what one conversation at a club meeting did.
How It Started
On December 5th, 2025 one of the members at the SPARC meeting started talking to me about digital modes and FT8. I went home that night curious enough to look into it. The next morning I had WSJT-X, GridTracker, and Ham Radio Deluxe installed and configured on my home PC with my Yaesu FT-450 handling CAT control.
The whole setup took less than an hour. Decodes started coming in almost immediately — the waterfall lit up with stations from all over the world. I made my first FT8 contact minutes later.
That was it. I was hooked.
What Makes FT8 So Different
FT8 is a weak signal digital mode that operates in a 50 Hz bandwidth with powerful forward error correction built in. What that means in plain English is that it can pull a usable signal out of conditions that would sound like pure noise on voice. It decodes signals down to -24 dB below the noise floor — SSB voice needs to be 10 to 15 dB above the noise floor just to be intelligible.
The practical result is that 5 watts on FT8 can do what might take over 1,000 watts on SSB. For a home station or a portable POTA setup running off a battery, that changes everything.
What You Need to Get Started
You don't need a lot. Here's the basic setup:
Radio — Any HF transceiver with a USB connection for audio and CAT control. I started on a Yaesu FT-450. The Xiegu X6200 is what I run in the field now. Almost any modern HF rig will work.
Computer — A standard Windows PC or laptop. Nothing special required.
WSJT-X — Free software, available at physics.princeton.edu. This is the engine that encodes and decodes FT8 signals. Install it, point it at your radio, and you're most of the way there.
GridTracker — Free companion app that displays a live world map showing every station you're hearing and working, connection lines, new grids, new countries, and more. Run it alongside WSJT-X from day one — it makes the whole experience far more visual and satisfying.
CAT Control — Connects your logging software to the radio so frequency and mode changes happen automatically. Ham Radio Deluxe works well for this. DX Lab Suite is what I run now and it handles logging plus automatic sync to LoTW, QRZ, eQSL, and Club Log.
The Setup Process
Install WSJT-X and go to File → Settings → Radio. Select your rig, set the correct COM port and baud rate, and hit Test CAT. If it goes green you're connected. Set your audio input and output to your radio's USB sound device and you're ready to decode.
Tune to 14.074 MHz on USB and watch the waterfall. Within seconds you'll see signals. Within minutes you'll be decoding callsigns from across the country and around the world.
Make your first call by double-clicking any decoded station and letting WSJT-X handle the exchange automatically. The whole QSO takes about 90 seconds and requires you to do almost nothing once you click.
One Year Later
300 SSB contacts in my first year of ham radio. Then 6,400+ FT8 contacts after one club meeting and one afternoon of setup. The difference isn't skill — it's the mode.
