Activate + TavaScope: The Free POTA Workflow I Built for Myself (and Now You Can Use Too)

Two free, mobile-friendly POTA tools: log your activation in Activate, then see your reach in TavaScope. Built by an activator, for activators.
Here's the thing nobody tells you about portable operating: the radio is the easy part. It's everything around the radio — the logging, the propagation guessing, the field notes you swear you'll remember and never do, the after-action analysis — that eats your time and your focus. I got tired of juggling three apps and a paper log from the front seat of my truck, so I built my way out of it.
The result is two tools that together run my entire POTA workflow, from the moment I'm deciding whether to even pack up, to the dashboard I share when I get home. One lives in the field. One lives at the desk. They talk to each other. Both run entirely in your phone's browser. And right now, both are free.

Activate — Your Whole Activation on One Screen
Activate (activate.tavaone.com) is the field half of the workflow. It runs entirely in your browser, it's built mobile-first so it feels right at home on a phone or tablet, and it keeps your data in your own Google Drive — no separate account, no walled garden. You sign in with Google and you're operating.
What it does:
- Real-time logging with a live UTC clock and running QSO counter, plus callsign lookup (QRZ with a HamDB fallback) and auto-fill of frequency by band and mode. Drop in a park reference and it pulls the park name for you.
- WSJT-X auto-import. This is the one that changed everything for me. Your FT8 and digital contacts flow straight into the active activation over the UDP bridge — no retyping, no flipping back and forth. You work the pileup; Activate writes it down.
- Conditions — know before you go. Local weather (temp, feels-like, wind, humidity, precip, cloud cover) sits right next to live solar and propagation data: Solar Flux Index, K-index, A-index, an HF condition rating, and the best bands to work. Then the Activation Outlook ties it together in plain English and tells you whether it's a "get on the air" day or a "maybe stay home" one.
- Heard By shows you who's hearing your signal and where it's landing — your activation as a live map of reach.
- Field Notes let you capture gear, conditions, and the little stories from each activation in the moment, saved straight to Drive so nothing's lost between the park and the blog post.
- History keeps every past activation in one place.
- Built for the field: mobile-first with pull-to-refresh, light and dark themes for bright sun or low light, and an offline fallback that downloads your files locally if Drive isn't reachable.
And when you're done? There's a button on your History page that opens that activation right in TavaScope — one tap, new window, ready to analyze.
TavaScope — Turn Your Log Into a Story
TavaScope (tavascope.com) is the desk half — except it doesn't need a desk. It's a free, open-source, privacy-first analyzer for your POTA logs that runs 100% in your browser and works just as well on your phone as it does on a monitor. Nothing uploads. No account. Your log file never leaves your device — it all computes locally and saves to your browser so your history is there next time.
Drop in any ADIF file — or open an activation straight from Activate's History page — and TavaScope builds you a full dashboard:
- An instant "Qualified" check — see at a glance whether you cleared the 10-QSO POTA minimum, and by how much.
- The headline numbers: total QSOs, bands and modes worked, unique grid squares, call areas reached, total duration, and your average rate in QSOs per hour.
- The fun stats: your Furthest QSO with distance and grid, your Best One-Hour Period, your Hottest 15 Minutes, your Most Productive Band, and your Most Active Mode.
- A QSO rate chart in 10-minute intervals so you can see exactly how your activation built and where it peaked.
- A contact map drawing band-colored lines from your QTH out to every station you worked — the prettiest way there is to see how far five watts really went.
- Automatic park lookup: name your file after the park (us-6700.adi) and TavaScope pulls the park name straight from the POTA database.
- Multi-activation history you can sort by newest, oldest, QSO count, rate, or name.
- Download-ready images: one tap exports a clean dashboard card built to drop straight into a post or a story.

Right now, everything you just read is free. TavaScope is free and open-source, full stop. Activate is free too — every feature, no trial, no catch. I am building paid tiers for advanced power-user features down the road, things like full mobile CAT control and full WSJT-X-style digital operation, but the core activation experience stays free.
